Billy Jon Nelson

June 27, 1988 ~ October 7, 2015 (age 27) 27 Years Old

Billy Jon Nelson (27) died on the night of Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at the hospital in Roseau.

Born June 27, 1988 at the hospital in Roseau, Billy - or "BJ" as he was known for most of his life - spent his first three years of life in Warroad, and then his family decided to move back to Wannaska where he lived most of his growing up years.

Billy attended Wannaska Elementary, Roseau Elementary, and Roseau High school through part of his 10th grade year. Billy grew to be a hard worker and was commended by most of his employers throughout his young life.

He moved to Detroit Lakes in 2007 where his sons Jaydon and Chance were born. Billy moved to Warroad in 2012 where his son Jaxston was born.

Billy loved dogs, working with his hands, and enjoyed doing car maintenance. He will be remembered for his smile which was always on his face, for his big dimples, and for his big heart.

Over the last few years Billy – like too many people – suffered from depression. So many things plagued him: sadness, fear, regret, and pain. In his last days the despair ate at him so much that it overcame him and he took his own life.  Depression and mental illness are a disease and are kept secret far too much. It was a disease that killed him which is what we need to remember.

Billy is survived by his sons: Jaydon, Chance, and Jaxston; by his parents: Brian Nelson of Wannaska and Connie Nelson of Warroad; by his siblings and their children: Beau of Trenton, NJ, Christopher (Tamara) Davidson and Logan, Graydon, and Remmy of North Bend, WA, Shelly (Jeff) Bowles and Austin, Sofia, and Garret of Sutherland, VA, Dayton Dybedahl of Badger, Wyatt and Easton Nelson of Badger; and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, his aunts Diana Loken and Joy (Galyn) Nelson, and his uncle Jon Nelson.

A graveside service will be held at America Cemetery at 2:30p.m. on Monday, October 12. The Rev. Karen Holmberg-Smith will officiate and a luncheon will be served at the home of Billy’s great aunt and Uncle Jeanette and Chancy Cole of Warroad.
