Vernon Dean "Bud" Dowty

Funeral services for Vernon "Bud" Dowty of Baudette, MN will be held on Friday, September 4th at 11 AM at First Lutheran Church in Baudette, MN.  Visitation will be one hour prior with interment at Elm Park Cemetery, Veteran's Park.  Military Honors by the Baudette Veterans Ceremonial Squad.

Vernon Dean “Bud” Dowty, age 85, of Baudette, MN died Monday, August 31, 2015 at the LakeWood Health Center after a battle with cancer.

 

Vernon was born on November 1, 1929 in Hartville, Wyoming.  His father, Milo Dowty passed away when he was one, and he was raised in Bloomfield, Nebraska by his grandmother, Anna Dowty.  He attended Lutheran school during his elementary years and then attended Bloomfield Public School.

 

He then went into the U.S. Navy for four years, where he was often stationed in the Mediterranean area.  He attended college at Wayne State in Nebraska and the University of Nebraska.  He was an avid sports fan who started his sports career in high school where he played basketball and football.  He continued enjoying playing basketball until he was 50 on teams through schools where he worked.

 

In 1952, he married Bessie Andreasen who is also from Bloomfield, Nebraska.  They have two children, Michelle (Gary) Gregerson of Roseau and Kevin (Shelby) Dowty of International Falls, MN.  He has five grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

 

His career started in Seward, Nebraska where he taught social studies, was a high school principal and coached.  He then moved his family to Carlin, Nevada where he was elementary and high school principal.  Next, he bought a resort at Crosslake, MN and got his first teaching job in Minnesota at Brainerd.  He then became Superintendent of Schools at Pequot Lakes, MN where he finished his education career.  His main hobbies were reading, hunting, fishing, training dogs, and following the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

 

Memorials preferred to the Humane Society, Baudette Library or the American Cancer Society.
