Lloyd Donald Wilmer was born on Oct. 8, 1929 to Alice (Peterson) and Axel Wilmer in Drayton, ND.  He moved with his family to a farm north of Williams at the age of five.  Lloyd attended school at the Bridges School north of Williams, graduating from Williams High School in 1948.  He worked for Arvid Olson logging and doing carpentry for four years.  He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1952-1954, stationed in Verdun, France.  He married Sunny Anderson on June 30, 1957 at Williams, and they farmed for many years.  Lloyd said, “The kids were the best crop we ever raised!”  He also worked for Heppner’s Dairy/Lake of the Woods Dairy and was known as “Warroad’s Smiling Milkman.”  He worked at Bert’s Red Owl for nine years, later purchasing the store in 1972 and moving his family to Warroad.  He also owned and operated Lloyd’s Meat Processing for many years.

Lloyd enjoyed traveling, both in the U.S. and abroad: Sweden, France, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Japan, Mexico and the Carribbean.  He made friends wherever he went.  He also enjoyed square dancing and would travel many miles to dance.  He met his “cronies of the round table” twice daily (every day for 40 years, except holidays and Sundays) for Yahtzee and coffee at the local café, gaining the nickname of “Quik Shake” for his fast actions and quick addition.  He was also known as “Ya Ya” (as he was often heard to remark!).  He sponsored a ladies softball team for many years called “Lloyd’s Ladies.”  Lloyd was a member of the Warroad American Legion, and served as chaplain.  He was also a 35-year member of the Warroad Lions, serving as their Treasurer for most of those years.  He was also an active member of the Warroad Chamber of Commerce.  He was known for his smile, good nature, and giving attitude.  He was a very hardworking man and touched many lives with his generosity.

Lloyd passed away peacefully, with his family at his side, at the Warroad Senior Living Center on Feb. 23, 2015 at the age of 85.  He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sunny; daughters and families, Alyce & Mark Vettel (Chloe &Eli) of Roosevelt, Deanne & Sheldon Vatnsdal (Pete, Daniel & Eric) of Roseau, Kathi & Marvin Norstebon of Gulf Breeze, FL, Janelle & Joe Kascak (Andie, Joshua & Nicole) of Broomfield, CO, Coralee (Kevin Holt) Meyers (Tyler, Samantha & Cody) of Roseau and Bemidji, Crystal (Jesse Solo) of Warroad; special family friend, Duane Story; sisters, Verna & Jim Menke of Roseburg, OR, Harriet & Glenn Sanner of Lancaster, MN, Marilyn & Gene Bitzer of Warroad; brothers, Harvey & Eileen of Warroad, Dennis & Lois of Fergus Falls, MN and Dale & Margaret of Roosevelt.  He will be welcomed into heaven by his parents; sister, Elaine; son, Steve; grandsons, Beau Vettel and Joseph Kascak, Jr., and great-grandson, Jaxon Hanson.
