Funeral services for Dorothy Olson of Warroad, MN will be held on Monday, June 13, 2016 at 11 AM at Zion Lutheran Church in Warroad. Visitation will be on Sunday evening from 5-7 PM at Helgeson Funeral Home in Warroad. Interment will be at the Riverside Cemetery.
Dorothy Ione Olson passed away peacefully on June 9, 2016 at the Warroad Senior Living Center at the age of 90.
Dorothy was born on May 24, 1926 in Warroad, MN to Grace Rosina (Brandli) and Harry Thompson. She went to school in Warroad and graduated from High School in 1944. She and Leslie Olson were married on September 9, 1951. They made their home in New Jersey for the first year of marriage, then returned to Warroad in 1952. Dorothy was employed by Glen Wing Clothing Store for many years, while also being a bookkeeper for her husband’s construction business and a homemaker. In her later years, she applied her talents of painting, staining and wallpapering in the Warroad area.
Dorothy enjoyed quilting and handiwork, making many beautiful pieces of Hardanger which can be found in many homes today. She made quilts for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed scrapbooking memories of her and Leslie’s families, spending time in the outdoors tending her flowerbeds and garden, and watching her beloved Minnesota Twins. She was active in the community, including, American Legion Auxiliary member for 63 years (holding various positions), Zion Lutheran Church, past Warroad Area Community Center Board Member, past LSS Board Member and on the first Volunteer Ambulance Service Team in Warroad.
She is survived by daughters, Joan (Joel) Powell and Janet (Wayne) Corneliusen and sons, Calvin (Janet) Olson and Gordy (Janet) Olson all of Warroad; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sister, Vivian Erickson Thacker; brothers, Curtis (Daphne) Thompson and Walter (Karen ) Thompson; sister-in-laws, Norma Thompson, Mavis Henke, Connie Olson; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Grace Thompson; husband, Leslie “Smokey” Olson, brothers, Harley, Maynard, Leon, Carol, and twin Dean; and sisters, Mildred and an infant; and one grandson.
