Stanley Ray Melby was born on September 29, 1950 in Roseau, Minnesota to Millard and Emma Dokken Melby. He was baptized and confirmed at the Oiland Lutheran Church and was currently a member of the United Free Lutheran Church in Greenbush. He attended grades one through eight at Haug Leo School, north of Greenbush. Stan was goalie on the hockey team there. He then went to Greenbush High School, graduating in the Class of 1968. He worked at Polaris until being drafted into the U.S. Army in June of 1970. He served active duty in Viet Nam from November of 1970 to November of 1971. He returned home and was done with his service in January of 1972. Stan was very proud of having served his country and received three medals during that time.
He married Eileen Waage in Greenbush on June 8, 1974. They had two children, Tanya Marie and Kurt Lynn. He worked at Polaris for a number of years and then became employed at the Roseau County Highway Department. He drove road grader and snow plow. During the winter months in the snow plow, he was paired up with his good friend, Jay Erickson (you can imagine the BS that went on then). He retired in 2016 after 32 years with the county.
Over the years he enjoyed deer hunting in Juneberry, many fishing trips with the gang to Anama Bay and Rogers in Manitoba. He also loved ice fishing. During his last winters, he was able to go along with Gordy Barrett. Stanley was thankful that Gordy did all the work and he was able to simply enjoy the fishing.
The Greenbush American Legion was his second family. He served as adjutant, finance officer and club manager there. He enjoyed his daily coffee with the Greenbush crew.
He loved spending time with family, making sure we were all together on holidays with plenty to eat. He was so proud of his two grandchildren, Andrew and Jordan. He attended every event he could.
Stan is survived by Eileen, daughter Tanya (Mark) Glad, grandson Andrew Glad and granddaughter Jordan Glad of Greenbush, brother Loren (Karen) Melby of Badger, nephew Jamie (Nicki) Melby of Anoka and their children Russell, Justin and Madison, also Madison’s son Beau Loren, nephew Gabe (Katie) Melby of Belle Plaine, Minnesota, daughter Lilli, grandchildren Logon and Alexander. He is also survived by many cousins and other relatives.
Stan was preceded in death by his son, Kurt in August of 2013, his parents, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Selmer and Victoria Waage.
God bless his memory!
