A Funeral Service for Ruby Haugen of Badger will be held on Thursday, October 26 at Helgeson Funeral Home in Roseau at 11 a.m. with visitation 1 hour prior.
Ruby Carolyn Haugen of Badger passed away on October 18, 2023, at the Warroad Senior Living Center, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.
Ruby was born on a farm near Badger, MN on December 12, 1937 to Marvin and Ruth (Smeins) Johnson. She attended Badger School and graduated from Badger High School in 1955.
In December 1956 Ruby married Floyd Haugen in Badger, and they were happily married for 64 years. They lived on the Haugen farm northwest of Badger. Ruby took special pride in “keeping the place looking nice”. She spent many hours mowing the large lawn, even out by the back quonsets. She also painted the outside buildings, always being careful “not to drip”. Her hard work paid off when they won the Roseau County Clean Farm Award in 1981.
Ruby was employed at Badger State Bank for nearly 9 years. She came from a musical family and loved music. After receiving only 17 piano lessons, she was an organist and pianist for nearly 40 years until arthritis forced her to quit playing.
She loved gardening and made wonderful meals from the garden including garden soup and raspberry malts. Ruby also loved sewing; there was nothing she couldn’t make or fix. Ruby was a talented baker, learning to make great potato and hardanger lefse when she became Norwegian by marriage. She was known by her family and friends for her baking, especially buttermilk brownies, Sally Ann cookies and divinity.
Ruby is survived by a daughter, Minda (Elliott) Sadlowski of Moorhead, MN and a son, Brent (Paula) Haugen of Badger, MN. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Erik Sadlowski of Fargo, Ryan Sadlowski of Moorhead, Trevor Haugen of Roseau and Tyler Haugen of Badger.
She was preceded in death by her husband Floyd, parents, and two brothers, Ronald Johnson and Marlin Johnson, both of Minneapolis.
Ruby’s family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the Warroad Senior Living Center staff for their warm and compassionate care. They treated her as family and she thought the same of them in return.
Ruby will be laid to rest at the Badger City Cemetery.
