Ronald Melvin Melstrom

Ronald M. Melstrom, 78, of Warroad, MN passed away on June 14, 2026 at LifeCare Medical Center in Roseau,  MN.  A memorial service with military honors will be held at Helgeson Funeral Home in Warroad on Friday, June 26, 2026 at 2 pm, with visitation 1 hr. prior.  

Ronald Melvin "Ron" Melstrom, 78, of Warroad, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 14, 2026, after a courageous battle with lung and brain cancer.

Ron was born on July 2, 1947, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Melvin and Evelyn Melstrom. He grew up in Blackduck, Minnesota, where he developed the values that would guide him throughout his life—hard work, loyalty, humor, and a genuine love for people.

Following high school, Ron attended college and earned his degree as an Auto Body Technician. He later proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, completing a tour and a half in Vietnam. Although many Vietnam veterans returned home to little recognition, Ron remained proud of his service and the men with whom he served.

Throughout the years, Ron attended Navy reunions and maintained close friendships with many of his fellow veterans. Some of his favorite memories included motorcycle trips to Sturgis with his Navy buddies. As time passed, the effects of Agent Orange and the years themselves claimed many of those friends, making those memories even more meaningful.

On March 12, 1983, Ron married the love of his life, Marjorie "Marge" Melstrom. Their marriage was built on laughter, patience, friendship, and unwavering support. Together they spent more than forty years side by side.

Ron and Marge spent 33 years catering for Marvin Windows, working together daily while building both a business and a life together. When people asked Ron how they managed to work together for so many years, his answer was often delivered with his characteristic humor: "If I had committed, I would have gotten out by now."

Ron is survived by his wife, Marge, of Warroad; his son, Tray, and daughter-in-law, Courtney; granddaughters, Mattie and Regan; step-grandchildren, Amanda and Devin; four great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family members and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Evelyn; his brother; his sister; and several aunts and uncles.

Music was one of Ron's lifelong passions. He played guitar and sang for many years and even built a fiddle that he briefly attempted to master. He developed a love for zydeco music and, during a visit to the Walker Cajun Festival, unexpectedly found himself on stage performing with members of a Cajun band, quickly turning strangers into lifelong friends.

Ron loved the outdoors. Hunting trips with his buddies and his brother-in-law often involved as much storytelling, laughter, and visiting as actual hunting. He enjoyed picking blueberries and once harvested nearly seventy gallons, later turning many of them into homemade wine to share with family and friends.

He looked forward to annual gatherings with his stepsons and friends, where old stories were retold, new memories were made, and laughter filled the room. Whether it involved duck boats, misplaced gloves, or hunting adventures, Ron's stories only became better with time.

Ron enjoyed collecting firearms, guitars, and reloading supplies, often joking that there could never be enough. He freely shared his knowledge and supplies with fellow hunters and friends and was always willing to lend a hand.

Perhaps more than anything else, Ron loved people. He enjoyed talking with anyone, anywhere, at any time. Whether sitting around a campfire, visiting at a reunion, stopping at a local store, or meeting someone for the first time, Ron genuinely enjoyed getting to know people. He had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcome.

Those who knew Ron believed that talking with people may have been what he loved most.

He would have loved seeing everyone gathered to celebrate his life.

This obituary offers only a glimpse of Ron through the eyes of those who loved him. His stories, music, laughter, and friendships will continue to live on in the hearts of all who know him.
