Pearl Hites, age 99 years and 9 months, of Roseau, MN passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2020, at LifeCare Roseau Manor, where she had lived for the past 6 years.
Pearl Violet (Johnson) Hites was born on June 7, 1920, in Jadis Township, the eldest daughter of Johnny and Inga (Molsness) Johnson. She was baptized at the Melum church. Her parents eventually had 5 other children: Andy, Muriel, Jean, Vernle, and Darlene.
Pearl was living in Badger when she met Howard Hites. They were married on Dec. 16, 1937 at Roseau. Pearl and Howard became the parents of two boys, Ronald and Roger, and two girls, Carol and Sonia.
Gardening and baking kept Pearl busy while her family was growing and she continued with these activities as long as she lived in her home in Roseau. Her grandchildren meant the world to her and she always kept up-to-date with their activities. Pearl had a very sharp mind for all of her nearly 100 years of life. She amazed even herself when she realized that she could recall events that had happened over 90 years earlier. She read all of the newspapers that she could and always finished the Jumble word puzzle in the Grand Forks Herald.
Pearl is survived by her daughter, Carol (Ronnie) Howell of Badger and son, Roger Hites of Fort Pierce, FL and Colorado: 12 grandchildren: Cindy, Kathleen, Elizabeth, Christopher, Janelle, Jimmy, Rhonda, Jeff, Troy, Chad, Kas, and Kristie; 23 great-grandchildren: Melissa, Erika, Wyatt, Jacob, Kristian, Collin, Garrett, Adam, Andrea, Briana, Chelsey, Kate, Matt, Erika, Tanner, Morgan, Peyton, Paxton, Ashley, Brittany, Christina, Mya, and Alex; 9 great-great grandchildren: Victoria, Morgan, Lux, Bayze, Jast, Skyla, Taryn, Toby, and Ty; one sister, Darlene (Nick) Zagone; one daughter-in-law, Judy Hites, and one son-in-law, Greg Hedlund. Also surviving Pearl are several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Howard, in 1984; one son, Ronald; one daughter, Sonia; her parents; her brother, Andy; and her sisters, Muriel, Jean, and Vernie,
Pearl was also the first grandchild of Andrew and Helga Johnson, Roseau County pioneers who settled in Ross Township in 1893.
