Muriel Irene Melby Green was born June 15, 1934, just east of Greenbush, MN on her grandparents farm in Hereim Township, to Melvin J. And Irene (Wilson) Melby. She was baptized and confirmed at Pauli Lutheran, rural Greenbush, MN. She attended the Sanwick rural school for two years, which was once located in the northeast corner of the Green Farm.
Muriel graduated from Greenbush High School in 1952, and went on to receive her BS degree at North Dakota State University, majoring in Home Economics, with a minor in science in 1956. She taught in Page, ND, Stephen, MN, and Greenbush, MN. While in Stephen, she received FHA (Future Homemakers of America, currently FCCLA) MN Lifetime Honoree Membership Award, and was very proud of that.
On June 25, 1960, Muriel married Albin (Abbie) Green at Pauli Lutheran. They lived in Stephen for five years before moving to Greenbush. They then took over the family farm from Albin’s parents. In 1967, they welcomed their only child, Douglas, and built their family. It grew in 1986 when Doug married Corena Christianson, who blessed Albin and Muriel with four grandchildren. She loved that they all lived in the same farm yard, and was happy to help with the grandkids and great grandkids any chance she could get. Muriel helped on the farm in any way needed, often times keeping everyone fed, tending her garden, milking cows, or helping shuffle the guys between fields. Muriel judged many county fairs around the area, and was sure to help her grandkids and great grandkids with their food projects, making them over and over until they’re perfect. The most important thing to Muriel though, was her faith. She was very active teaching and in the women’s group at both Pauli Lutheran and United Free Lutheran for her entire life.
Muriel is survived by Doug and Corena, her grandchildren and great grandchildren: Monica (Preston) Byre with Brielle and Beckett, Matthew Green with Irene and Garret, Michele (Blaire) Berg with Bentley and Briggs, and Michael Green (special friend Katelyn Larson). She is also survived by her last sister Joan (Orin) Green, sisters-in-law Paulette Melby and Carol Hemp, and brother-in- law Roger Bjorgan. Five nieces and five nephews survive Muriel: Roger (Rachel) Green, Wendell Green, Kory (Maria) Melby, Kirsten (Tim) Michalke, Kevin Melby, Heather (Steve) Bjorgan Wehling, Sylvester "Buzz" (Susan) Hemp, Florence (Tim) Mundt, Carolyn (Greg) Hoyer, and SueAnn (Earl) Wahl, as well as many great nieces and great nephews.
Albin preceded her in death on December 31, 2021. Also preceding her in death are her parents, sister Faye Bjorgan, brother Wallace Melby, and brother-in-law Ernie Hemp.
