Marion Bertha Moe of Wannaska, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2026 at the age of 88.
Marion was born on November 18, 1937, in Roseau, Minnesota, to Melvin and Esther Kolstad. She spent most of her childhood in Wannaska, Minnesota, and also lived in St. Paul for a time while her father worked in an ammunition factory.
Marion and Arden Moe married July 1, 1955, at Riverside Lutheran Church in Wannaska. Together they shared 61 years of marriage.
Marion and Arden were adventurous and enjoyed every chapter of life together. In 1957, Arden was drafted into the United States Army and stationed at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, and later at Fort Rucker, Alabama. During this time, Marion and Arden lived in Newton, Alabama. Marion worked on the base and made lifelong army friends. Renting a home from Herb and Hazel Allen, introduced them to their southern adopted parents, and Alice Fay Allen (Mizell) and Franklin Allen, who were spoken of as her “southern siblings". They enjoyed many trips south over the years to visit their southern family.
In 1964, the family returned to Minnesota and spent a couple of years working on the farm in Skime. She also worked for the Roseau nursing home and advanced into the hospital business office. After selling the farm she and Arden moved to the Wannaska area and 200th Street where her parents, an aunt and uncle and cousins resided. At one time there were 6 families all related on 200th Street. Marion became a self-taught florist and business owner. She founded Moe’s Floral and became one of the few women business owners in the area at that time. Her work was highly successful, and she was known for her creativity, skill, and eye for beauty.
One of her favorite career choices was being a Paraprofessional at Malung School. She loved her students and coworkers. Later, she looked forward to her Wednesday morning (not too early) volunteer work at The Nook in the Roseau Hospital. Her Nook family was very important to her and she loved them dearly.
Marion was deeply involved in her church community. She taught Sunday School, directed the choir, served as a youth group chaperone, and was organist for many years until she was no longer able. She especially loved playing the pipe organ that Arden and Allen built together for Riverside Lutheran Church.
Gardening was Marion’s true passion, and she could grow anything. Her gardens, solarium, and conservatory were always kept in full bloom. She loved sharing her plants and her knowledge regarding keeping them alive.
She also enjoyed camping and traveling with Arden and her family. They made many trips through the states. This was one of their favorite annual summertime events. Where to go next?
Marion is survived by her children Sherri (Jack) Kukowski, Susan (John) Dagen, and Allen (Suzanne) Moe; grandchildren Elysia Kruger, Sarah Paur, John (Andrea) Kruger, Jana (Deriek) Kukowski, Zachary Barnes (Scott), David Barnes (Tiffanie), Alex Moe, Noah Moe, Lily Moe, Dylan (Niki) Dagen, Allison (Doug) Steenberg, and Lucy (Drake) Mehlan; and great-grandchildren Jaxon, Oliver, William, Ellie, Vincent, Sölveigh, Aliveah, Emma, Savannah, Ella, Levon, Lucinda, Althea, Cecilia, Beau, Juniper, and Maxine. Along with nieces and nephews, Dave (Barb) Kruger and all the many members of her extended family, who she would remind us…”they are mine!”
She was preceded in death by her husband Arden Moe, her parents, Melvin and Esther Kolstad, great-granddaughter Delilah Steenberg and others.
As Marion would say, “Say your prayers, and see you in church somewhere.”
In Lieu of flowers the family would wish to have donations made to the Riverside building and memorial fund.
