Lorraine Hedlund Obituary

Lorraine passed away June 16, 2023 at LifeCare Manor in Roseau at the age of 101.

Lorraine Doris Reed was born Sept. 4, 1921 at Budd Hospital in Roseau, MN to Willis Reed & Ida (Skogstad) Reed.  She was the oldest of 4 daughters.

Lorraine grew up in Pinecreek, attending elementary school at Groveside School and high school in Badger, where she lived with host families.  She was valedictorian for her graduating class in 1940.  She then taught elementary classes (grades 1-8) for 5 years.

Lorraine married Leonard Hedlund on Dec. 22, 1945. They met while playing on opposing softball teams.  They were blessed with 4 children: Carter, Douglas, Gwen, and Dean.

Lorraine stepped away from her teaching profession while she and Leonard raised their children, then went back to teaching in the Malung school district for 25 years.  She was a well-loved teacher of 2nd, 3rd & 4th graders.

Lorraine & Leonard raised turkeys on their farm in Malung for several decades. She was an avid gardener & never shied away from hard work. After Leonard passed away, she stayed on the farm until age 89, when she moved into an apartment in Roseau.  Later, she moved to Oak Crest Senior Living, and then to LifeCare Manor at age 99.

Lorraine had a deep faith in her Lord Jesus Christ, which shaped the life of integrity that she so well lived.  Prayer was an integral part of who she was.

She was chosen as Roseau County Senior Citizen of the Year in 1997. She spent years bringing library books to the nursing home residents & faithfully read the Roseau Times-Region to them.

Lorraine’s family was very important to her, and she was loved by 4 generations of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, & great-great-grandchildren.

She was blessed with a remarkable memory & clear mind, and faithfully followed the activities of all in her family.

Lorraine is survived by her children: Carter (Wanda) Hedlund, Douglas (Linda) Hedlund, Gwen (Michael) Bonnema, Dean Hedlund; grandchildren Jamie (Joel) Anderson, Jeremy (Tara) Hedlund, Chad (Nicole) Hedlund, Tami (Bill) Yon, Todd (Paula) Hedlund, Andy (Dawn) Hedlund, Aaron (Laura) Bonnema, Ashley (Patrick) Warren, Hayley Hedlund, Seth Hedlund; 33 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; sister Ilene Trangsrud, as well as many nieces & nephews.
