Llewellyn Dean Brateng

Llewellyn “Lew” Brateng, age 83 of Roseau, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.

Lew was born to Lewis and Clara (Dahlquist) Brateng in Roseau, MN on December 27, 1942. He grew up on the family farm in Malung Township. His daily life for many years included caring for beef cattle, milk cows, geese, chickens, pheasants, ducks, pigs, horses, rabbits, and bees. He raised wheat, oats, corn, alfalfa, and barley. He was proud of his four large gardens with an abundant variety of produce. He liked flowers and plants of all kinds.

As a lifelong farmer, he found time to visit with family, friends and neighbors. He loved listening to old country and gospel music on his Makita radio. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking, and mechanics, modifying and inventing items to being a jack of all trades.

He taught his children to love the Lord, respect others, hard work, a good afternoon nap and a sunshiny day.

Lew is lovingly remembered by his son, Jason (Michelle) Brateng of Phillips, WI, daughters Sharolyn Brateng of Willmar, MN, Jen (Isaac) Echelberry of Thief River Falls, MN. Grandchildren Nathan (Tia) Brateng of Eagan, MN, Heather (Brian) Gullickson of Ottertail, MN, Joshua Brateng of Roseau, MN, Sarah, RaNae, Owen, Stefan, Kimry. Great grandchildren Edwinuse, Elizabeth, Emma. Friends Sherry, Kristine. Siblings Lucille “LaMae” Mortenson, Verland (Mildred), Ival (Clara), Russell “Cameron” (Claudia) and many nieces, nephews, cousins, special friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Clara, Marvin Brateng, Geraldine Thompson, Julaine Ingeman.

Visitation is at Roseau Helgeson Funeral Home on Saturday, May 2, 2026 at 1:00 pm. The memorial service starts at 2:00 pm and will be followed by a fellowship lunch before the grave side service at Bethlehem Cemetery, Golden Valley Township, Roseau, MN.
