Judith “Judy” Ann was born on May 5, 1943, to Agnes Praska in Park River, North Dakota. As an infant she was adopted by John and Annie (Kaml) Penas in Badger, Minnesota, where she grew up and attended the Badger School and graduated in 1961. She was baptized and confirmed at Our Redeemers Lutheran Church in Badger. On August 11, 1962, Judy married Russell Hanson at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Badger. They made their home in the Benwood area, where they farmed and raised their six children.
Judy’s real joy came from spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the rest of the family. She spent a lot of time out in the yard tending to her big vegetable and flower gardens filled with many lawn ornaments. She made the best pickles according to her granddaughter, Tiffany. Judy also made sauerkraut at the Northland Threshing Bee for many years. She was in her glory when she was cooking and baking for family gatherings and enjoyed decorating the yard with thousands of lights for Christmas. She was a true Roseau Ram hockey fan and could be found sitting in the Memorial Arena for many home games!
She is survived by her husband Russell, children: Sheldon Hanson, Sherri (Larry Arnold) Cauble, Shirley Hanson, Sherman Hanson, Shane (Kathy Grahn) Hanson, and Sheddean Hanson. Grandchildren Tiffany (Casey) Larson, Jonathon and KaraAnn Cauble, Hailey Hanson and Dylan Hanson; and Great Grandchildren Owen and Kiah Larson. Sister-in-law, Carol Hanson and Brother-in-law Roger Hanson and many nieces and nephews.
Judy was preceded in death by her parents, brothers John Penas and Ralph Zrust, brother-in-laws Wallace Hanson and Charley Shimpa, sister-in-law Bernice Shimpa, and nephews Jason Hanson, Wayne Penas, Kevin and Ronald Shimpa.
