John Welberg Obituary

Memorial services for John B. Welberg of Baudette, MN will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 2nd 2019 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Baudette.  Visitation will be on hour prior, interment at Elm Park Cemetery in Baudette, and military honors by the Baudette Veteran Ceremonial Squad.

John B. Welberg was born on July 4, 1938 in Warroad, MN to Art and Gladys Welberg. He grew up in the Clear Lake, South Dakota area until he came to live with his father. He attended school at the wheeler country school and his last four years at Crookston Agriculture School. After graduation, John joined the Air Force for two years.

John married Barbara Stowell on June 18, 1960. They lived in Los Angeles, CA, Denver, CO and Minneapolis, MN. In 2005 they bought a Park Model at Snow to Sun RV Park in Weslaco, TX and spent many winters there. They both knew that home sweet home is in Baudette, they raised their daughters Carole and Denise in Baudette.

John worked as a welder in the big cities but when he came back to Baudette he made his living as a farmer until he retired. The main crop was foundation seed potatoes. One of his proudest moments was when he was asked to be the Grand Marshall in the Williams annual Potato Day Parade. He took pride when his daughter Denise was asked to be a Queen candidate and years later his granddaughter Kintessa Canfield was chosen the Queen on Potato Day in 2005.

John spent most of his spare time doing what he loved most, fishing, flying, hunting and farming. These things he loved doing with his grandchildren and of course, his many friends. He enjoyed his 120 Cessna flying up trout fishing with several of his friends during the winter, with skies on his plane. He got great pleasure in giving plane rides to young people who would otherwise not be able to go up in an airplane. He took great pride in sharing that love with others.

John was a member of the local Moose Lodge, a lifetime member of the American Legion and a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

John will sadly be missed by his many friends and family, especially those who enjoyed playing pool with him and his many flying and fishing buddies. John had an amazing sense of humor and he always had a smile. His smile is how he was remembered by his care givers in all of his many stays at different hospitals. He was known to his friends as “Barney”

He is survived by his wife Barbara of 59 years; daughters, Carole (Tony) Quinones of Oak Creek, CO, Denise (Glenn) Canfield of Black Earth, WI; grandchildren, Mandy Quinones of Oak Creek, CO., Monique Quinones of San Antonio, TX and her daughter, Elise Dessaux of Paris, France.
