John Daryl Dahl was born on April 21st, 1961 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was the youngest child of Alfred and Marlis Joan (Carlson) Dahl.
He started school in Wannaska in 1967 and then went on to Roseau High School. John was a U.S. Army veteran. He married his wife, Elizabeth (Bette) Louise Allison on December 11th, 1996 in Roseau.
He and Bette got together in 1988 in Arizona, and then headed for Alaska for a few years before returning to Minnesota to be near his family. John started several businesses and updated his farm to raise sheep and goats. John restored many antique snowmobiles and a few vintage cars. He never cared for the 'past being lost'. He felt he needed to do his part so people would remember. John reached out to the community and people he'd never even met many times over the years and he didn't want recognition for the many things he did or contributed to. He felt that would 'diminish the spirit of the gift'.
John Dahl was a gifted 'John of All Trades' and he kept his world spinning 24/7. He said many times, "As long as I'm here, I want to be productive", and he was, from businesses to a non-profit that salvaged his old grade school memories. He also grew to be a gentle and loving caretaker of his loved ones with health issues.
About his own death, John didn't want any service or fuss. He felt that people would be better served to spend that time with their own families. To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die. He may no longer be with us, but his spirit, his love, and his passion will live on in each of us. We will hold onto the memories, laughter and love he shared with us. In doing so, we keep his spirit alive. Farewell, dear John, until we meet again.
John is survived by his loving wife, Bette, and sister, JoAnne (Roland) Anderson. He is survived by his sisters-in-law who loved him, and other family members he held in high esteem. John was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Marlis Dahl, and brothers: Jerry, James, Jack, Joel, and Jeffrey Dahl, and his sister, Judy Stavenes.
