Harold Sam Evans passed away suddenly at his home on Sunday, August 30, 2020 at the age of 66. Sam Evans was born on September 6, 1953 in Roseau, MN to Clyde and Lillian (Mohagen) Evans. He grew up in Malung, MN attending school there through the 8th grade. He attended grades 9-12 in Roseau, graduating from high school in 1971. Sam was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Malung. He and Jane were members of First United Lutheran Church in Roseau.

During his younger years Sam enjoyed showing cattle for 4H, driving tractor and helping on the farm. He later farmed with his brother and dad. They raised beef cattle and small grains. He also worked for Halverson Sand and Gravel plowing snow and driving truck and for Wilson Brothers, retiring from there in 2014. He had several other jobs during his retirement, which he loved.

Sam met Jane Straub at a softball game in Roseau and fell head over heels in love! They were married in Sisseton, SD in 1981 and had three children; Andy, Heidi, and Becky.

Sam loved attending his kids’ many sporting events. He was always very supportive, spending many hours at events and traveling frequently to see them compete - from watching his son score his first hockey goal, to his daughter coach the Rams to a state volleyball tournament appearance, and to seeing his other daughter win a national title in track. He was there for it all. Never missing a thing! He also enjoyed bowling, playing softball, playing cards, mowing the grass and taking care of his garden, as well as building planter boxes and other woodworking projects. He loved being outdoors and spent a lot of time at their cabin, although he did like to travel too.

Sam had a gentle soul and a kind heart. He was always willing to help out and volunteered for charities, including the Blackwoods Blizzard Tour – a snowmobile ride that raises money to fight ALS.

Surviving Sam are his wife, Jane; children Andy (Carrie) Evans of Conifer, CO, Heidi (Mike) Greenwood of Fargo, ND, Becky (Ken) Hayden of Roseau; grandchildren Jack, Brooks and Ramsey Evans, Quincy Greenwood, Audrey, Gracie and Maggie Hayden; siblings Joan (Morris) Hulst, Ione (Gary) Olson, Ruth (Pete Kruse), Louise (Lorris) Vatnsdal, Leelan (Joni) Evans all of Roseau; brothers-in-law Richard (Margaret) Straub of Brooklyn, WI, Robert (Debbie) Straub of Lowell, MI, Dennis Olson of Badger, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Lillian Evans; sister Audrey Olson, in-laws John and Erna Straub; grandchildren Jules and Leni Jo Greenwood.

The family has requested memorials to be sent to: Northwest Minnesota Foundation- "Evans Charitable Fund" - nwmf.org/give-now/ or LifeCare Health Care Fund, 715 Delmore Drive, Roseau, MN  56751.
