I was born on July 2, 1941, in Rugby North Dakota to Clarence and Bernice (Thompson) Herman. I had 3 older siblings, Arlo, Lillian and Audrey. I was raised on the family farm in Upham. My beautiful mother passed away when I was 12 years old. I was so lucky to have Auntie Lila and my sisters to help take care of me and teach me so many things in life. I was forever grateful for them. I attended the small country school for several years.  My sister Lillian had the pleasure to teach me and my cousins, Jr, Myron, Dorothy, Corrine and Nephew Leon. Oh, the fun we had with her as our teacher. I did eventually attend Upham High School graduating from there.

How I met the man of my dreams, is a true love story. I was milking cows with my dad on a hot July day. As I was sitting on a milk pail, doing what we did for milking, my Uncle Maynard brought home a few co-workers from the Minot Airbase. This young handsome man saw me on the milk can and thought, I’d like to take her on a date. Unknown to me, as I stood up, I had a large whole in my pants. Maynard said, I think you’d like to meet this young lady and take her out. This young man named Dale asked me out to the Minot Fair. We went, had a great time, & he even gave me a kiss as he left me that night. He didn’t even realize that he had stolen me from a few others that had been interested.

Marriage happened just a little over 1 year later, on November 8th, 1959.  Yes, it was during deer hunting season. 2 children joined us, our first-born, Mark on May 27th, 1961, and 11 months later, our daughter Denise on April 29th 1962.

Thru my years as a housewife and mother, I was able to work cleaning houses at the Minot Air Force Base.  Dale and I also bought my dad’s farm and milked cows.

At a young age, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. I had several stays in the hospital over the years, had several surgeries, while being a mother and housewife. I stayed positive and never complained. I was ever so thankful for Auntie Lila and Sharon Miller for helping with the kids while I was ill.

I soon decided cleaning houses had to end and I joined the staff at Upham Public Schools. I was a Teachers Aid for many years. I was also active in several organizations and Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

My daily life consisted of meals for my husband, the Dairy Farmer, and raising 100’s of chickens in the summer for several patrons and just staying busy on the farm.

I was blessed to see my children graduate, get married, and move on in their lives.

Dale and I sold the farm and started a new adventure that led us to Minnesota. Over these years we managed several apartments, made new friends, played lots of cards and bingo. I also had the privilege to join an Accordion Band called The Highway 11 Ramblers. This was the highlight for me for several years and loved every time we played. I was also awarded for my years of service and dedication to the Badger T&C.

We are currently members of the Faith Lutheran Church.

I have been blessed to be Grandma and Great Grandma. I love the children and the joy they brought me as I watched them grow.

I was also blessed over the years of my life to have made amazing friends and memories that I am forever grateful.

May God Bless and Keep All of You.

Although I am no longer here, Dale and I would have celebrated 65 years of Wedded Bliss this November 8th, 2024. Thanks for the Love you gave me. I’ll Love you forever until we meet again. I’ll be waiting with my arms wide open.

I am proceeded in death by my parents, Clarence and Bernice (Thompson) Herman, Siblings Arlo, Lillian, and Audrey.  Nephews Lester & Randy. Mother and Father-in-law, Edward and Virginia Manning and brother-in-Law Wayne Manning, Son in law Daniel Brandt.

I am survived by Husband Gerald Dale Manning, Son Mark (Patty), Daughter Denise (Shayne) Isane, Grandchildren, Matthew (Anna), Robert (RaeAnn), Michael, Katie, Devyn (Shena)and Danielle (Adam).
