Floyd “Wayne” Cox was born to Floyd Monroe and Thelma (Maye) Cox on June 2nd, 1947. He attended Hemphill, W.V. and graduated high school from Welch, W.V.
Wayne joined the Air Force in 1966. While stationed in Grand Forks, North Dakota he met and married Patricia Waling in August 12, 1968 and had 2 children, Teresa and Tim.
In his 20 year enlistment he spent one year in Vietnam, one year in Illinois, and 18 years in North Dakota. He started his years of service repairing and maintaining airplanes and B52 bombers, from there he went on instructing future airplane mechanics and supervising instructors. He retired from the Air Force as a Master Sergeant (E7).
After his retirement from the Air Force he decided to go from fixing air planes, to fixing cars, and attended NDSCS. In 1989 he moved to Fox, MN to work at the Sorensen Chevy dealership in Roseau. Due to poor health he stopped working in 2000. In 2003 he moved to Badger, MN where he presided until present.
Wayne was a member of the American Legion and VFW. He was a member of Northland Assembly church and served as an assistant treasurer for years. In his healthy years he liked to hunt, camp, and fish. He has always liked computer games and had his first home computer in the mid 80’s. He loved getting family together and in recent years discovered Veterans on the Lake resort in Ely, Mn where he would invite family to join him and Patty for one week a summer. He also enjoyed taking trips back to West Virginia to visit family and the mountains he grew up in. He loved to tell his stories of growing up in the “holler”.
Wayne is preceded in death by his parents, Floyd Monroe Cox and Thelma Lafon, in-laws Lester (Tom) and Evelyn Waling, brother in-law Denny Hale, infant twin siblings Billy Rae and Carole Sue Cox, infant granddaughters Carly and Olivia Cox and sister-in-law Laura Gross.
Wayne is survived by wife Patty, children Teresa (Jeff) Henning of Fargo, ND and Tim (Christina) Cox of Moorhead, MN. He has 4 granddaughters: Samara Cox of Hillsboro, ND; Madissen Cox of Minneapolis, MN, Alyssa (Sam), and Katelyn Henning of Fargo, ND. He also has one great granddaughter Evelyn Maaske of Hillsboro, ND. Also surviving are his siblings Brenda Hale, Welch, WV; Floyd Gross of Marion, VA; Paul (Chris) Cox of Bluefield WV and Kim Cox of Rolfe, WV. Also survived by Patty’s siblings: Danny(Renee) Waling, Ronnie(Evie) Waling, Tina Watterson, Sally (Bill) Helland, and Marcy (Ted) Mears. Along with many nieces and nephews.
Wayne spent his last weeks under hospice care at Bethany on University in Fargo ND due to lung and liver cancer. During his time there he had some exceptional care from some of his favorite staff; Jordyn (LJ), Jason, Jessica, Puspa (cutie), Marjan, Dairi, Alex, Angie, Jessica, Maggie and Araba.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 26th at 11:00 AM at the Helgeson Funeral Home in Roseau with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Valle Cemetery in Grygla following the service.
