Elhue was Born on July 27,1939 and raised on the family farm in Badger, Minnesota, to parents Edgar Sr. and Yula (Steinbach) Castle, Elhue attended Badger School through the 8th grade. It was through family connections that he met his beloved wife, Evelyn, a relationship that would lead him to International Falls, Minnesota. There, Elhue began his working life hauling pulpwood with his uncle before securing a position at the mill in International Falls.

On September 4, 1959, Elhue and Evelyn were united in marriage at the Lutheran Church in Loman, Minnesota. The couple initially purchased the family farm in Badger, Minnesota, where they lived for a few years before embarking on an adventure to Springfield, Oregon. In Oregon, Elhue worked as a crane operator for Weyerhaeuser while Evelyn worked nights at various jobs as they raised their three young children.

In the spring of 1973, the Castle family returned to Minnesota, drawn by their desire to raise their children in the farming tradition they both cherished. Elhue farmed dairy cattle and grain in the Roseau area. They also rented other farm land for grain. In the early 1980s, Elhue and Evelyn made the decision to sell their dairy cows and focus exclusively on grain farming. Throughout these years, Evelyn worked out as well as doing farm work.
