Charles Samuel “Sam” Gibbons, Respected Tatanon, Dad, Uncle and Cousin, formerly of Windigo Island and Buffalo Point First Nation, passed away peacefully on Wednesday May 11, 2022 at the Wiigwas Elders and Senior Care Centre in Kenora, Ontario at the amazing age of 92.
Sam is survived by his children Maureen and Todd (Kim) Powassin, grandchildren Jordan, Stephanie, Amanda, Shane, Sara and Todd Robert, great grandchildren Ryan, Noah, Nevaeh, Brielle, Bradlee, Liam, Zoey, Brodie, Ivy, Alora and Zane, cousins Les, Vernon, Gidget, Dee Dee and Juanita Sargent, niece Toni Lightning and many other cousins, nieces and nephews. His circle of friends and family was abounding…he will be missed by many. Sam was preceded in death by his wife Jane Powassin, his parents William “Willy” Gibbons and Margaret “Maggie” Aas, grandparents Ethel and Tom Lightning, Uncle Eddie, Uncle John, Uncle Hans, nephew Tom Sargent and niece Lorraine Lightning.
“The day the sun started shining”….. as Sam liked to describe the day he was born, was September 28, 1929. He was born to William Gibbons and Margaret Aas in Kenora, Ontario. The family moved to the Warroad area a few years later….this is where Sam attended school, graduating in 1949. He was an avid hockey player, often making big plays on the ice with Buster Oshie. The two of them took the team to State in ’48 & ’49.
Sam loved to fish, he was a guide on Lake of the Woods for many years passing on his love of fishing (and favorite hot spots) to his children and grandchildren.
Story telling was another favorite for Sam. He was an awesome speaker that had a captive audience wherever he went. His desire to share his knowledge and culture knew no bounds. His “stories” will live on.
