Beverly J. (Anderson) Smedsmo

Beverly "Bev" Jean Smedsmo, 82, of Roseau, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2026, surrounded by her family.

Bev was born on October 14, 1943, in her parents' home in Roseau, Minnesota, to Joel and Ruby Anderson. She graduated from Roseau High School in 1961 and continued her education in Crookston, where she earned her nursing license. Bev spent many dedicated years working alongside Dr. Didrikson at the Roseau Clinic until her retirement. Even after retiring, Bev's caring spirit and strong work ethic kept her busy. She volunteered in the kindergarten classrooms in Roseau so she could be close to her granddaughters, and she also spent nights at Northern Horizons Assisted Living Facility to maintain her nursing license.

Bev had the biggest heart and never met a stranger. She had a gift for making friends wherever she went and was always ready to lend a hand to anyone in need. She will be remembered for her caring and loving personality, her precious laugh, and her deep love for life.

Bev had a passion for adventure and especially treasured her travels with her sidekick and dear friend, Irene Michal, as well as the many special friendships she held throughout her life. One of her favorite travel adventures was going to Graceland, Elvis Presley’s house in Tennessee. Bev was a huge Elvis Presley fan. In retirement, she enjoyed spending Saturdays at rummage sales with Irene, working in her yard, and hand-picking dandelions because she refused to spray them. She loved being outdoors, whether sitting on her deck in the summer sunshine, enjoying the changing leaves in the fall, or spending time in nature.

Additionally, Bev had a great love for her country, the American flag, and her hometown of Roseau. Whenever asked where she was from, she would proudly tell them Roseau, and that it is the absolute best place to live. Bev also had a deep compassion and love for all animals. So much so that she once rescued an abandoned baby deer, bottle fed it and raised it. The deer loved her so much and followed her around her farm for many years. She would also consider her friends and families’ pets as part of her extended family, always having her door open to them and giving them so much love when they came over to her house. Bev had strong faith and treasured going to services at Messiah Lutheran Church.

Above all, Bev loved her family, especially her granddaughters. She faithfully attended their sports and activities, traveling around the state to watch them play hockey and making countless memories through special sleepovers only a grandmother and her grandchildren could share. Summers in Baudette with family brought her great joy. While there, she loved spending time outside at her daughter's golf course, caring for the flowers and picking up broken tees around the course.

Bev was preceded in death by her parents, Joel and Ruby Anderson; her infant brother; her nephew, Ben Beckel; and her best friend and travel companion, Irene Michal.

She is survived by her most loyal and special friend, Lloyd Foster; her daughter, Julie Skoglund; her son, Eric (Carie) Skoglund; her sisters, Judi Hermans and Peggy (Kit) Beckel; her grandchildren, Emily Skoglund (Jaeden Johannesson), Ashley (Domenico) Mastres, Chase (Jennifer) Myhrer, Wayde (Nichole) Jensen, and Carter Jensen; her great-grandchildren, Skylar and Bo Myhrer, Marlee Jensen, and a baby boy Johannesson expected in October 2026; her nieces and nephews, Josh (Marsha) Beckel, Sarah Adamson, Pete Hermans, and Chris Hermans; and her great-nephew, Alex Beckel.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at LifeCare Roseau Manor and Northern Horizons for the many years of love and excellent care they gave Bev. They also wish to thank Beverly's many friends, whose companionship and love helped make her life so full and special.

A Funeral Service for Beverly J. Smedsmo will be held Tuesday, July 7, 2026 11AM at Messiah Lutheran Church of Roseau, MN.  A visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
