Lorraine B. Backlund

Funeral services for Lorraine Backlund of Roseau will be held on Saturday, October 15 at 3 PM at First United Lutheran Church in Roseau.  Visitation will also be at First United Lutheran on Friday evening from 5-7 PM followed by a 7 PM prayer service and again Saturday, one hour before the funeral.  Interment will be at the Spruce Cemetery in Roseau. 

Lorraine Beatrice Backlund passed away on October 11, 2016 at the age of 96 at Roseau Manor.   Lorraine was one of twelve children and was born September 22, 1920 to Edwin and Beret (Bredeson) Lanes in Wannaska, MN, where she grew up and attended school.

Lorraine married Marvin Backlund in Roseau on July 31, 1940.  Lorraine was very active in First Lutheran Church and served as Sunday School Superintendent for over 30 years and organist for over 40 years. Once her children started school, Lorraine worked at Sheltering Oaks and the Roseau Children's Home before working as a paraprofessional for the Roseau school district from 1969 until her retirement in 1985.  

Lorraine's was the place to be for good home cooked meals, donuts, cinnamon rolls and, of course, coffee. She loved housekeeping and did laundry, ironing, wallpapering, and upholstering for neighbors and friends when her children were young.  Saturday mornings meant pinning up all the neighborhood ladies' hair and yes, more coffee.  In 2012, Lorraine moved from the family home to Oakcrest Senior Housing. She moved to Roseau Manor in July of 2016.   

Lorraine is survived by her children, David (Carol), Bloomington, MN; Steven (Laura), Carson, WA; Jon (Debbra), Fargo, ND; Mary (Glen) Fugleberg, Sartell, MN; James (Jean), Moorhead, MN; son-in-law, Alan (Nancy) Landin, Brainerd, MN; and sister-in-law, Violet Sunsten, Roseau, MN, and many nieces and nephews. 

She has 11 grandchildren, Sue, Mark, Meredith, Michael, Kati, Kim, Paul, Rachel, Sarah, Adam, and Matt.  She also has 12 great grandchildren and 3 step-great-grandchildren:  Alisyn, Isabella, and Liam; Troy and Felicia; Levi, Genevieve, and Viviana; Taylor, Carter, and Julian; Addison and Maleah; Tate and Azrielle.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin in 1975; daughter, Ruth in 2000, her parents; and all eleven of her brothers and sisters: Olea, Alma, Ella, Esther, Nellie, Betsy, Adolph, Arnold, Ernest, and two infant siblings, plus many nieces, nephews and in-laws.
