Herbert L. Weston was born on May 9, 1932 to Erwin and Irene (South) Weston on the Hillcrest farm near Hannah, North Dakota.  He grew up in the area and graduated from Sarles High School, Bottineau Junior College and Bemidji State University. Herb served in the U.S. Army from 1954 - 55. He completed his basic training in Fort Riley in February 1954 and was later stationed in Fort Ord, CA for Advanced Infantry Training. Herb later transferred to Fort Campbell, Kentucky for Paratrooper Jump School.  He finished his military career in Fort Bragg, North Carolina and was honorably discharged in 1955.

On November 21, 1954 he was united in marriage to Marjorie Boomgaarden in Langdon, North Dakota.  After a short time in Kentucky, North Carolina and Bemidji, Minnesota, they moved to Roseau, where they raised their family and, except for a brief time in Maida, North Dakota, they spent the rest of their lives.

Herb was a popular math teacher at Roseau High School, where he taught from 1957 to 1970, and he always enjoyed visiting with former students, when they stopped to say hello.  He also proudly served as a full time U.S. Customs officer from 1970 until his retirement in 1997.

Herb loved the outdoors, and was an avid fisherman and hunter; he harvested his last deer this past November. He enjoyed camping any time of the year, and he especially loved sharing fishing and canoe trips to Canada with family and friends.  Visiting with his morning and afternoon coffee crews was a special part of his daily routine. He loved telling stories, and even better, hearing a good one.

Herb loved his family, and enjoyed time with his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, siblings, nieces and nephews, attending their many activities over the years.  His family is forever grateful for the loving care he showed their mom during the last years of her life.

Survivors include seven children, Tom (Dianna) Ackerman of Lafayette, CO, Tim (Patty) Ackerman of Green Valley, AZ, Sarah Grindstaff of Excelsior, MN, Stan (Priscilla) Weston of Wannaska, MN, Susan Weston of Plymouth, MN, Stuart (Lori) Weston of Roseau, MN and Sheldon (Nan) Weston of Sauk Rapids, MN; eighteen grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren; sister, Carol Dietz of Issaquah, WA, brothers, Richard Weston of Fargo, ND, Harold (Gail) Weston of Langdon, ND, sister-in-law, Marilyn Weston and many nieces, nephews and other family members.  He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marjorie, his parents, Erwin and Irene Weston, a brother, Glenn Weston, sister-in-law, Marion “Snook” Weston and a great nephew, Brent Weston.
