Florence "Flossie" Moen Obituary

A Funeral Service for Florence “Flossie” Moen of Baudette, MN will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at 11:00 AM at First Lutheran Church in Baudette.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.  Interment will be at Elm Park Cemetery in Baudette at a later date.

Marie Margaret Florence Perreault was born at home on the family farm in Terrebonne Township near Red Lake Falls, MN on September 21, 1930, the last of fourteen children to Albert and Elodia (Laundry) Perreault. Her family was French Canadian and she grew up speaking French. She went to school in a one-room school house. In March of 1984 Flossie legally petitioned the courts to change her name to Florence Moen. With her two longtime friends Helen Curtis and Lucille Hoscheid by her side to testify that, Florence was the name they knew her to be called by.

Florence “Flossie” met Calvin “Cubby” Moen in Crookston at the Grill Café where she worked as a waitress with her sister, Mona. They were married on September 3, 1949 at the First Lutheran Church in Baudette.  On November 28, 1963 their only child Debra was born on Thanksgiving Day.

Flossie’s career started at Rowell Laboratories where she saw many changes in her five decades working at the Plant. One of those changes was the company name to Reed-Rowell then sold to Solvay Pharmaceutical. One thing that did not change was the unit dose machine she worked on until retiring in January 1996.  She was an avid bowler and went on annual State bowling tournaments and even attended some National tournaments. She threw many 200 games making her the teams anchor. For her size it was hard to believe she threw a 12 lb. ball!

Flossie was an excellent seamstress, who started quilting after she retired. For 23 years she joined other quilters on Tuesdays at the First Lutheran Church for fellowship, treats, coffee and of course quilting. She kept count of the quilt tops she made, which totaled 100 or more a year! Many days she would say I have too much work to do, which meant I am busy sewing.

Flossie was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the VFW Auxiliary, and the First Lutheran Church. She was a hard worker, full of laughs and known to have a couple drinky-winkies and harmonize with her friends and family.

In 1996 Flossie and Cubby moved to Summerfield Baudette Highrise and lived there until September 2018. For a short period of time she lived at Country Meadow Estates where she was welcomed in to Jan and Steve Olson’s family receiving excellent care, having good times, and lots of great meals! In April 2019 she moved to LakeWood Care Center in Baudette, where she passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2019.

Flossie is survived by her daughter Debra (Dennis) Beckel; grandson Gus (Suzanne) Beckel.

She is preceded in death by her parents; siblings, George, Wallace, Omar, Robert “Noel”, Stella, Rose, Mae, Doris, Mona, Sylvia, Cecelia and two siblings in infancy.

Flossie’s family would like to extend a Special Thank You to the staff at LakeWood Health and Care Center for their exceptional loving care and kindness provided to her as a resident.
