Brian M. King

Memorial services for Brian King of Warroad, MN, will be held on Monday, September 19, 2016 at 3 PM at the Warroad High School Gym.  Visitation will  be on Sunday evening from 5-7 PM with a 7:00 prayer service at the Roseau Community Church (Hwy 89 S. in Roseau.) and one hour prior to the service at the school.  Interment will be at the Malung Cemetery.  Memorials will be directed to the family's choice.

Brian Mitchell King was born on March 28, 1974 in Baudette, Minnesota to Thomas King and Carol (Cota) King. He lived in Indus through fifth grade before moving to Warroad, where he graduated from Warroad High School in 1992. He then began his pursuit of his criminal justice degree, playing baseball while attending Northland Community and Technical College for two years and then graduating from Bemidji State University in 1996.

After graduation, Brian lived in Drayton and was employed at the Pembina (ND) Port of Entry as a Customs and Border Protection officer. He moved to Warroad to work at the Warroad Port of Entry in 1996, eventually earning the title of Port Director in 2007, the position he proudly held to this day.

In 1994, he married Kari Lund. To this union, his two children were born. Justin (22) and Ellie (18) graduated from Warroad High School in 2013 and 2016, respectively. Throughout their youth, Brian proudly watched his children in their sports and activities. 

Justin is currently a senior at Bemidji State University and Ellie is a freshman at North Dakota State University. Brian married Angela (Vagle) King on June 4, 2010. The couple lived in Warroad, where they spent their time involved in many activities together.

Everyone knew BK. He was a man in his community who touched the lives of everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him. His kids and sports were the pride of his life, and they often went hand-in-hand.  He was a true lover of sports – whether it was coaching his son and many others in baseball and hockey, or taking part himself. He loved playing wiffle ball in the summer and skating with the boys in the winter. Pride and joy also came in watching Ellie at her many dance recitals and seeing her grow into a beautiful young lady.

In his true “King” spirit, Brian had the gift of gab, often quoting movies with his brother, aggravating his sisters, talking politics with his dad, or visiting over coffee with his mom. Anyone who crossed his path was sure to be greeted with a smile and conversation.

Brian and Angie loved spending time at their cabin in Long Point catching walleyes, boating, and jet skiing. They enjoyed playing golf and volleyball, four-wheeler rides, and going on trips together. His “hunting land” at Williams was where the deer hunting stories, campfires, and true relaxations came for him. He was often found at the rink or the baseball field, watching his son, nieces or nephews. When he was fishing or hunting, it always came at the pleasure of those who were with him. He truly loved the kids in the family and did everything he could to help them succeed in their lives.

Brian loved his job, and he was honored to be a part of the Customs and Border Protection family. His time at work was spent answering many questions about CBP. He prided himself in knowing the answers, or having the access to quickly find them out.

Brian passed away on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at the age of 42. He is survived by his wife, Angie King; children, Justin and Ellie King; parents, Tom and Carol King; sister, Wendy (Damon Ellenson) King and her children Landon and Keaton, Tammy (Craig) Kennedy and their children Laci, Tori, and Patrick; and brother, Todd King; in-laws, Neil and ReNae Vagle, brother-in-law, Jon (Janelle) Vagle and their children Tyler and Landon; and his sister-in-law, Laura (Josh) Sunsdahl.

We as a family and community are so proud to call him a son, husband, father, brother, uncle, co-worker and friend. He was a great man and will be greatly missed.
