Barbara M. Zak

A Funeral Service for Barbara Zak of Roseau, MN will be held on Monday, June 17, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Rose Free Lutheran Church in Roseau, MN. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 16, 2019 from 5-7 PM with a 7:00 prayer service. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Moe-Rose Cemetery in Roseau, MN. 

Barbara Maxine Zak was born on April 7, 1937 to Amanda (Holland) and Henry A. Petersen. She graduated from Roseau High School in 1955. Following high school she took a 9-month business management course at Aakers Business College in Grand Forks, ND. Barbara and Donald Zak were united in marriage on January 14, 1958. They lived in Ray, ND where Donald worked in the oil fields until 1960 when they moved back to Roseau where Barbara worked at ASCS Ag Office. In 1966 they purchased the East Side Grocery in Roseau. They lived there and Barbara operated the store until they closed it 18 years later. They also farmed and ran Don’s Trucking for 23 years. Barbara enjoyed helping on the farm; if she wasn’t driving tractor, swather or combine she was on the road running after parts of some sort. She also worked at Eventide Home for several years and retired from there after the flood in 2002.

Both Barbara and Donald enjoyed having their own race horses in the races at Assiniboia Downs race track in Winnipeg. Barbara was an avid Minnesota Wild Fan and enjoyed watching the games on TV, she very seldom missed one. Barb and Donald also enjoyed snowmobiling in their younger days and then also 4-wheeling up in the Beltrami Island State Forest as well. They enjoyed spending time together; usually where one was the other was there too. They were happily married for 54 years until Donald passed away on February 12, 2012. Barb enjoyed a trip to the casino when she got a chance and had bought herself a new car, which she took much pride in, just before she had surgery in September of 2014. Things didn’t go well with the surgery, she ended up with an infection and weakness that caused her to be pretty much home bound ever since.

Barbara had a great sense of humor, she loved telling stories and jokes and having a good laugh. She also enjoyed reading and spending time with family and friends. She was an active member of the Rose Free Lutheran Church all her life. She was also a member of the Rose Ladies Aid and served as Sunday School teacher for several years. Barbara was a member of the Roseau Eagles Aux, where she had served as President.

Barbara passed away on Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at LifeCare Medical Center in Roseau. She was 82 years old. She is survived by her sister, Marlene Budd of Roseau; sister-in-law Marge Przekwas of Roseau; one godchild, Kayla Hagen of Roseau; several nieces and nephews; her special friends and caregivers, Jenny Wolfe and LaRayne Gjovik of Roseau; special friend Gale Bergren of Roseau; and her many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry A. Petersen and Amanda (Holland); husband Donald; sisters Irene (Petersen) Germond, Ruby Peterson; and infant sister Marian Petersen.; brothers-in-law, Donald Kvien, Ross Germond; great - niece, Shelly Dokken.
