Larry Phillip Lund passed away surrounded by family on January 30, 2017 at the Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND at the age of 87.
Phillip was born on May 29, 1929, at the Lund home in Spruce Township of Roseau County to Ole and Oleanna (Gotland) Lund.  The youngest of 12 children, Phillip checked his trap line each morning before milking a couple of cows, then off to school.  He enjoyed skiing cross country to school or running two miles by road. He also enjoyed skiing down haystacks, and loved his dogs, Rex and Buster, and numerous cats, such as Pollyanna. After graduating from the 8th grade, he worked for Vernon Chilgren and the Peterson’s by Williams, MN, then off to log, in northern MN and the west coast.  He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean War from 1952-1954.  He was the Company barber in the Marines and a community barber in civilian life. He and Alice Sylvia Lindgren were married on June 6, 1954, and bought a farm in Malung Township in 1956.  Phillip worked as a dairy farmer for 20 years and beef cattle for longer.  He also farmed small grains and Kentucky Park bluegrass. He won the Clean Farm Award for Roseau County in the 1960's. He claimed to have retired at age 55, which made him very busy doing custom work.

He was a very devoted husband, father, and friend.  He was helpful to neighbors, mowing and snowplowing for them.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman.  He truly enjoyed hunting wild game.  He shot ducks, trapped skunks and enough critters to buy his first gun (Winchester 22) and shot many deer over the years.  He could fix anything and everything with a little duct tape and a lot of plywood.  He built a self-propelled lawnmower, the “Lund Sleighs”, deer stands, many sleds and bent oak boards into skiis for the sleds.  He had the first New Holland TR 70 combine in Roseau County, and his 135 Massey Ferguson that he named "Mighty Mouse" was his loyal tractor for over 50 years.  Phillip enjoyed snowmobiling in the 70's and had community snowcat parties with about 20 snowmobiles.

He created "Poppy & Grammy's park" on the south 40, with a teepee, merry-go-round, special swings and playground equipment. The annual Family Causeway vacation has been held since 1989, which included lots of family fun. Phillip enjoyed traveling to the mission fields in Brazil, Norway, Hawaii, Alaska, the Bahamas, Las Vegas, the Holy Land, and Greece.
Poppy never knew the word, “no”!  He was always willing to lend a hand to neighbors and strangers.  He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends.  If he could give someone a sleigh ride, he was in his glory.  He was a faithful Lutheran, and accepted the Lord as his personal Savior at the age of 4.  He had a great work ethic and worked diligently 6 days a week, but would always have Sundays for rest and family recreation.  He served on many boards, including the Malung School Board, Salol Elevator Board, Malung Township Board, and Spruce Church Board. He was a State Fire Warden and a lifetime member of the VFW, American Legion, and 40 et 8.

He is survived by his wife, Alice of Roseau; children, Rachal (Douglas) Erickson of Roseau, Larry (Carol) Lund of Warroad, Gayle (Chuck) Baxter of Roseau and Kathleen (Craig) Slick of Baudette; 9 precious grandchildren, Nycole (Mike), Sarah (Scott), Jordan (Angie), Tyler, Grant (Savanna), Kyle (Tiffinee), Teresa (Brian), Isaac, and Bethany; step-granddaughter, Cheryl (Dean) and children, Austin and Justin; 10 precious great-grandchildren, Alexa, Ava, Axel, Knox, Emma, Brody, Tatum, Laney, Kinsley and baby-to-be Erickson; brother, Morris Gjessing; sisters-in-law, Clara Johnson, Elvera Kvarnlov and Dora (Craig) Edgerton and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Ole and Oleanna; siblings, Molly, James, Palmer, Alma, Betsy, Oscar, Alvina, Helen, Ludvig and Thea; and step-great-grandchild, Dustin.  May God bless the memory of Larry Phillip Lund.
