Lovina V. Torkelson

Funeral services for Lovina Vendella Torkelson of Roseau, MN will be held on Monday, November 14th at 2 PM at Pinecreek Lutheran Church north of Roseau, MN.  A visitation will be one hour prior at the church, with interment at Pinecreek Cemetery.

Lovina Vendella (Paulson) Torkelson of Roseau, MN passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on November 10th, 2016 at the LifeCare Roseau Manor at the age of 87.

Lovina was born April 26, 1929 to Wilfred & Delia (Thompson) Paulson in Piney, Manitoba.  She grew up on a farm south of Piney and attended school at the Pine Valley School through the 8th grade.  The oldest of 3 girls, she worked very hard helping her mom and dad.  Her cousins Roy Anderson and George Paulson lived with them a while and helped on the farm.  Her father was not well and died when she was only 18. 

She met the love of her life at a church picnic in Wampum, Manitoba.   Gilmore lived right across the border on MN Hill.  They were married September 29th, 1952 at Moe Lutheran Church in Roseau.  They built their home on the hill where they raised 2 boys, Roger and Ronald.  Lovina worked hard on the farm and at home, and later worked as a cook at the Ross School, Amco and then at Larson’s Drapery.  After retirement, they enjoyed many trips with family and friends.  Going to Norway in 1999 was one of the highlights of her life. 

Lovina was an active member of the Pinecreek Lutheran Church and the Pinecreek WELCA, serving as President, Vice President and Secretary for the WELCA.  She made many quilt tops for Lutheran World Relief and their church sales. 

Lovina will be remembered for living a full and active life.  She loved reading, sewing, crocheting, embroidering, knitting and was one of the best cooks around.  She could do anything she put her mind to. Her homemade buns and lemon bread were some of her family’s favorites! 

Family was very important to her.  Her grandkids and great-grandkids were a huge part of her life and brought her so much joy.  Her extended family was also very important to her and she loved to spend holidays and special occasions with them. 

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Gilmore in 2013; sister and brother-in-law Gladys and Melvin Morken, brother-in-law Robert Gunderson; in-laws Andrew & Margit Torkelson; and grandson-in-law Chad Olson.  She is survived by her sons Roger(Beverly) of MN Hill and Ronald of Roseau; Grandchildren:  Stephanie(Eric) Lins, Melanie(Jake) Sletten, Adam(friend Hannah) Torkelson, Andrew(Stephanie) Torkelson, Matthew(Sarah) Torkelson and Jacob Torkelson; Great Grandchildren:  Teagan Lins, Griffin Lins, Delia Sletten and Nicholas Torkelson; Sister Darlene(Richard) Culleton of Vassar, MB;  Sister-in-law Marion Gunderson of Roseau and many nieces and nephews.
