Jon Curtis Shirley

A Funeral Service for Curt Shirley of Roseau, MN will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at Rose Free Lutheran Chruch in Roseau, MN at 2:00PM. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 27, 2015 from 5-7PM at Helgeson Funeral Home in Roseau, MN and also one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be held at Moe - Rose Cemetery in Roseau, MN. Military honors by the Roseau Memorial Honor Guard.

Curt passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2015 at the age of 79.

Jon Curtis Shirley was born March 12, 1936 at St. Luke's Hospital in Fargo, ND to Elder LeRoy and Esther Mildred (Edlund) Shirley. He was raised in Wolverton, MN and attended school at Wolverton graduating from high school in 1955. When Curt was nine years old he went to live with his Grandma Edlund and uncle on the farm to help with housework and chores. He kept Grandma company as Grandpa had just passed away. After a few years, Curt and Grandma moved in to Wolverton to live with the Shirley family. Curt continued working on the farm through the summer. He would ride the school bus out to work in the evenings. He also worked in Fargo-Moorhead as a painter before going into the Army. After two years in the Army, Curt returned to work in the Wolverton area as a plumber's helper.

Curt Shirley and Diane Evert were married on October 13, 1962 at the Salem Lutheran Church in Wolverton. Diane passed away in 1996. Curt went to work for the Red River Grain Co in Moorhead and then transferred to the Roseau Elevator in 1964. In the fall of 1966, Curt bought the Standard Oil Station in Roseau from Joe Granitz and started as a Standard Oil Agent. He spent many years providing service for his customers and creating lifelong friendships over many cups of coffee. In 1979, Curt sold the bulk oil business to Johnson Oil Co. and continued to work for them until 1999 when failing health forced him into retirement. Curt Shirley and Jean (Kotta) Skoglund were married on November 28, 1998 at the Assembly of God Church in Roseau, MN.

Curt was a member of the Roseau JC’s and the Roseau Lions. He served for 20 years on the Roseau Volunteer Fire Department. He was also on the Roseau Free Lutheran Church Board for several years. He enjoyed volunteering at the Pioneer Farm. Curt mowed and took great pride in caring for the Moe - Rose Cemetery for nearly 30 years. Curt liked gardening, bike riding, camping, hunting and being with his grandchildren.

Curt was preceded in death by first wife, Diane; son, Rodney; brothers, Larry and Lowell; sisters, Kathryn, Jane, Beverly, Gail; son-in-law, Scott Warne.

He is survived by his wife, Jean; daughter, Becky (Gary) Grondahl of Roseau, MN; son Ryan Shirley (girlfriend Traci Henrickson) of Roseau, MN; step-children, Tracey (Phyllis) Skoglund of Brooklyn Park, Robin Johnson of Gatzke, Darrelyn (Scot) Tutt of Miller, South Dakota and Travis (Trisa) Skoglund of St. Augustine, Florida; sisters, Diane Swenson of Casper, Wyoming and Mary Sopp of Portland, Oregon; grandchildren, Brandon (Mandi), Cody, Kati, Taylor, Tanner, Kali, DyAnna, Cheyenne and Dalton; step-grandchildren, Faith, Brooke, Elee, Desiree, Emily, Joshua, Hannah, Jessica, Hannah and Samuel.
