John David Magnusson

Memorial services for John D. Magnusson of Roseau, MN will be held on Monday, January 16, 2017 at 11 AM at Helgeson Funeral Home in Roseau.  A visitation will be one hour prior to the service.  John passed away on January 7, 2017 at the age of 63.

John David Magnusson passed away at his home in rural Roseau, MN on January 7, 2017 at the age of 63.

John was born on April 28, 1953 in Roseau, MN to Peggy (Torfin) and Yvonne Magnusson.  He grew up in Roseau and graduated from Roseau High School in 1971.  When he was young, John enjoyed curling and participated in the state high school curling tournament. He worked on the grass seed project for the University of Minnesota while in high school, then continued his schooling studying math at the University of Minnesota.  He moved back to Roseau and farmed small grains and grass seed with Magnusson Farms; retiring in 2004.

John enjoyed reading, Sudoku, crossword puzzles and watching Gopher hockey, football and basketball; and technology (most recently his drones).  He was an avid gardener and spent much of his time identifying and collecting native flowers and grasses. John was a strong supporter of the environmental causes and enjoyed his many trips to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and the Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario.  He had a love for animals, especially his dog, Bugs.  He will be remembered as a hard-worker with a tender heart and a compassion for other people and nature.

He is survived by his brothers, Mike (Denise) Magnusson of Pelican Rapids, MN, Mitch Magnusson of Roseau and Richard (Kathy) Magnusson of Roseau; sister-in-law Susan Magnusson; nieces and nephews, Brent Jon, Angela, Rachael, Melissa, Matthew, Andrea, Aaron, Jarod, Derek, Joseph, Sasha, Andrew and Nicholas.  He is preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Robert.

  In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to: Doctors Without Borders, Alcoholics Anonymous, or Mercy Corps.
