Gladyce M Bjelverud, 86 years old, passed away at LakeWood Care Center in Baudette, MN on 1/18/2015.
Gladyce Marie Lindberg was born 1/1/1929 to Albert and Lydia Lindberg in Baudette, MN. She attended Spooner Boone country school and graduated from Baudette High School in 1947. That same year she enrolled in the Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Grand Forks ND and became a Registered Nurse in 1950. After graduation she was employed at Deaconess Hospital where she found her call of ER nursing. In later years she would always comment about how hearing ambulance sirens would get her heart pounding with adrenaline.
In 1948 Gladyce met her husband to be, Alton “Lefty” Bjelverud. They were married March 20, 1953 in Moorhead MN. Lefty and Gladyce settled into married life in Galesburg ND. Lefty worked in Galesburg selling Pontiac cars and Case machinery and Gladyce worked at Union Hospital in Mayville ND. To this union three children were born, Lori Bjelverud Kulas and a son and daughter who passed away in infancy.
As life went on, Lefty became postmaster in Galesburg and Gladyce found a new passion in nursing at the Luther Memorial home in Mayville ND. She was one of the few who cared for the residents at the home during the famous March 1966 blizzard. She was employed there until 1976.
Gladyce and Lefty were very fond of the outdoors; fishing and deer hunting were their favorite pastimes. Many talks were had about the one that got away be it a fish or a deer! After Lefty retired they became residents at two homes, one in Galesburg in winter and up to Baudette for fishing. They made many lifelong friends there who all enjoyed the fun of fishing.
Gladyce left nursing for a time and started another job path managing the West Trail Cafe in Galesburg until 1983, when Lefty retired from the post office.
The call to be a nurse happened again and Gladyce started employment at Lakewood Care Center in Baudette MN. She worked there part time until her retirement at the age of 70 years old in 1999.
Gladyce is preceded in death by her husband, Lefty and two infant children George Alton and Stacy Lee. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Dino Kulas of Alexandria, MN. She is also survived by cousins and many dear friends.
Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at 2 PM at Wabanica Lutheran Church in Baudette. Visitation will be one hour prior with Interment at the Elm River Cemetery in Galesburg, ND.
