Memorial services for Elwood J. Gubrud of Baudette, MN will be held on Tuesday, February 20th at 11 AM at Wabanica Lutheran church north of Baudette, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior, with Military Honors by the Baudette Veterans Ceremonial Squad. Interment will be held at a later date at Wabanica Cemetery.
Elwood “Curly” Gubrud age 91 of Baudette, MN passed away Wed., February 14, 2018 with his wife by his side at the LakeWood Health Center in Baudette.
Elwood was born on June 5, 1926 at the Gubrud farm house in Bagley, MN, the son of John and Christine (Sletto) Gubrud. His mother passed away when Elwood was two weeks old, so he was raised by his Grandma Gubrud. His Grandma only spoke Norwegian, so when he started school at the rural school in Copley Twp., he did not speak very much English. Elwood was baptized and confirmed in the First Lutheran Church, Bagley, MN.
Elwood married Aris Mulholland on July 11, 1956 in Bagley, MN at the Evangelical Free Church. They were married 61 years. Elwood worked in Alaska as a logger, worked on the Great lakes, worked in Silver Bay, MN at the taconite plant, was a welder and pipefitter on construction sites and farmed in Bagley.
Elwood and Aris lived in Bagley on their farm until 1991 when they retired and moved to Baudette. Elwood and his wife Aris traveled in their motorhomes for 35 years across the U.S. and spent their winters in Florida, Texas and Arizona and their summers spent fishing on Lake of the Woods for walleyes.
Elwood served in the U.S. Army in Germany and Japan in WWII from 1944-1946. A highlight in Germany was when Elwood was able to ride Heroheeter’s white horse.
Elwood enjoyed fishing, hunting, working in his shop, gardening and watching wildlife from his home in Baudette.
He is survived by his wife, Aris; brother, Arnold (Shirley) Gubrud; nephew, Kenny Gubrud, numerous cousins, sister-in-law, Marian Lay; niece, Carolyn (Joel) Adamson, great-niece, Heidi (Chris) Barton and family Sam, Seth and Katie Barton; great-nephew, Matt (Amy) and family Chaz, Evie, Lucy and Max Adamson; great-niece, Amanda and Steven and great-niece, Beth (Bryant) Olson. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Christine Gubrud; brother, Art Gubrud; brother-in-law, Henry Lay; sister-in-law, Alma Burr; and brother-in-law, Alton Burr.
