Alma G. Heskin

Funeral services for Alma G. Heskin of Roseau will be held on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at 2 PM at Helgeson Funeral Home in Roseau.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.  Interment will be at the Pinecreek Cemetery.

Alma G. Heskin passed away peacefully on August 20, 2016 at LifeCare Roseau Manor at the age of 94. She was born on June 23, 1922 to Gilbert and Ida (Elton) Skogstad of Roseau and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Alma grew up in Pinecreek and attended Roseau High School. From 1943 to 1945, Alma served in the U.S. Navy (WAVES) where she was stationed at Arlington, Virginia in the Bureau of Personnel as part of the 13th regiment. On April 12, 1946 Alma married Clayton Heskin and the couple lived on a dairy/grain farm in Pinecreek where they raised their five children. In 1966, Alma, Clayton and their four younger children moved to California where she enjoyed being closer to her sister, Martha, and brother, Orville. A year later the family returned to Minnesota and settled in Roseau. Alma worked various jobs including Amco and Marvin Windows.

Alma enjoyed socializing over a game of Farkel (dice) or cards with her friends and family. Another favorite past-time was watching her beloved Minnesota Twins. Alma appreciated the old classic black and white movies and could remember all the names of the old actors and actresses. She also enjoyed painting and working puzzles which kept her mind sharp. While living at the East Side Court, you couldn’t miss her yard with the many beautiful flowers. She was a great gardener and took pride in her flower beds and hanging baskets.

In August 2015, Alma entered LifeCare Roseau Manor for recuperation of a fractured femur where she received care from many wonderful nurses and staff. Alma enjoyed the many activities and valued the friendships formed while at LifeCare Manor, which she referred to as “her home” over the last year.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton, grandsons Timmy and Ryan, and siblings Gladys, John, Gerald “Orville,” Martha and Marvin. Alma is survived by her children; Sheila (Gayln) Solberg of Wannaska, MN, Deborah (Ernest) Meier of Badger, MN, Nick (Sandy) Heskin of Tucson, AZ, Patricia (Gary) Spaeth of Alexandria, MN, and Peggy (Michael) Reinart of Warrens, WI; grandchildren, Blaine Solberg, Melanie Solberg, Jessica (Meier) Markgraf, Tyson Meier, Cary Heskin, Daniel Heskin, Jeremy Spaeth, Jenel (Spaeth) Palm, Andrea (Reinart) Roussev, Scott Reinart; and great-grandchildren, Jacob, Hannah, Levi, Patience, Nicoli, Jaxon, Hunter, Parker, Kaia, Milanya, Tyler, Avery, Emily, Sommer, Dominic, Noelle, Nikolas, Madison, Makiah, and Sawyer.

Alma was a member of the Moe Lutheran Church in Roseau.
