Tom Albert Smedsmo (Al, T.A.) passed away peacefully on July 21, 2006.
He was born March 10, 1916 in Norland Township, Roseau County to Norwegian parents, Syver and Synne (Brunstugun) Smedsmo. He attended school at Norland. The family moved to Enstrom Township of Roseau County in the late 1920’s where he continued school in Spruce #109. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1941 and served as a mortar gunner in the Pacific Theatre until the end of WWII. He married his bride of 65 years, Marjorie Michal on the eve of Pearl Harbor, December 6, 1941. Following the war he farmed in Enstrom Township. Marge, Al and Annette relocated to Naples, Florida in 1965 where Al worked as a carpenter until his retirement in 1981. Al and Marge traveled extensively during retirement with trips to Norway, Bermuda, cruises and annual visits to Minnesota. In 2003, they moved to Boca Raton, FL to be near their daughter. They were charter members of the Sons of Norway Lodge of Cape Coral, FL. He was a member of the VFW Post #8663 of Roseau and Spruce Lutheran Church. The couple also worked their voting precinct in local, state and national elections for Collier County, FL for many years.
Al is survived by his wife, Marjorie of Boca Raton, FL; sons, Jim Smedsmo of Warroad and Dennis (Barb) Smedsmo of Roseau; daughter, Annette (Ken) Mogell of Boca Raton, FL; grandchildren, Kim, Jamie, Deaune, Darrin, Kelsey, and Katie; great-grandchildren, Tatum, Sean, Rowan, and Ian.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Anna Bakken, Peter Smedsmo, and Clara Kveen.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 27th at 2 PM at the Helgeson Funeral Chapel in Roseau. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services. Interment will be at the Norland Cemetery in rural Salol. Military rites by the Roseau Memorial Honor Guard. A service was also held on Boca Raton, FL.
