Funeral services for "Nancy" Agnes Wilson (Greenshields) Holmgren of Roseau will be held on Wednesday, October 10th at 2 PM at First Lutheran Church in Salol, MN with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Norland Cemetery.
Nancy (Agnes) Wilson Greenshields, youngest of 5 children was born in Hannah, North Dakota on November 6th, 1920 to William James and Catherine Richmond McLeod Greenshields, emigrants from Scotland. Nancy graduated from Brooten HS in Minnesota in 1939. In the fall, she enrolled at Moorhead State Teacher’s College, but left in the spring of 1940 to care for her mother who died June 27th 1941. Nancy’s father passed away April 30th 1946. She was preceded in death by brothers Andrew and William, sisters Jessie and Catherine, and beloved husband of 35 years, John Holmgren Sr.
Nancy met John Holmgren in 1940 when she was working in the mercantile in Hannah and John was working on the rail line that passed through town. They dated prior to John leaving for work in the shipyards in San Francisco, California, and in 1942 Nancy left Hannah to join him. They were married in November of 1942. Their first child, John Michael Jr. was born in November of 1943. The family moved to northern Minnesota the following spring, bought farm land east of Salol, and built a permanent home there after their second child, Laurie was born in 1948. Another son, Harris was born in 1955, and the youngest, Clyde was born in 1957. After John Sr. died in 1977, Nancy was married for 19 years to John Grove of Roosevelt, Minnesota. John Grove died in 1995.
Nancy Agnes Greenshields Holmgren spent the last 8 years of her life living at Sheltering Oaks (LifeCare Senior Center) where she had worked for 15 years. Her dearest friend at LifeCare was Ed Gross, and her room was decorated with the photos and memories of her simple but rich life. Nancy cherished the Salol community and surrounding area where she and John Sr. had many friends and where she resided for the majority of her life. Nancy was a member of the Salol Lutheran Church and a past member of the Eastern Star. She died peacefully at LifeCare Senior Center in Roseau, Minnesota on Sunday, October 7th 2012 encircled by her family. Interment will be in Norland Cemetery at Salol, Minnesota.
Nancy’s favorite color was burgundy. Her favorite flower was the showy ladyslipper. Her favorite actor was Clark Gable. Her favorite movie was “Gone With the Wind”. Her favorite song was “You Are My Sunshine”. Her favorite hymn was “How Great Thou Art”, and her favorite pastime was caring for her grandchildren. John Holmgren Sr. was the love of her life. She is survived by her children John Jr., Laurie, Harris, and Clyde, 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.
