Funeral services for Ernest Carlson of Wannaska will be held on Tuesday, December 20th at 2 PM at Helgeson Funeral Home in Roseau. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Ernest Elmer Carlson was born on May 24, 1928 in Pencer, MN to Pete and Lena (Ringius) Carlson. He attended school in Pencer and was a member of the 1942 confirmation class of Pine Grove Lutheran Church. In October of 1950, Ernest was inducted into the U.S. Army, and as a Sergeant earned the combat infantryman’s badge for participating in active ground combat during the Korean War.
After completing his military service, Ernest returned to Pencer where he farmed, logged and operated a sawmill, and served for 28 years on the Golden Valley Township board.
In December of 1970, Ernest married Nancy McManus in Bemidji, MN. Except for a short stay at the VA Nursing facility in Silver Bay, MN; Ernest spent the last year of his life at the Warroad Senior Living Center. He entered the Warroad facility on January 21, 2011 and died there on December 16, 2011 at the age of 83.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy of Wannaska; children, Michael and David McManus, Janie, Christine, Brett, and Michelle Creger; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers, Allen and Clayton (Barbara) Carlson of Roseau; and sisters, Sharon (John) Orvis of Lineville, Iowa and Carol Carlson of Roseau. Also surviving are 24 nieces and nephews; and sisters-in-law, Linda and Helen. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lowell and Dennis; sisters, Norma (Stanley) Anderson, and Gwen (Clarence) Nelson; and 3 nephews and a niece.
