Memorial services for Mildred Simmons “Millie” will be held Saturday, January 22 at Riverside Church in Wannaska at 11:00 A.M. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Mildred died Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at LifeCare manor in Roseau.
Mildred Simmons was born October 19, 1927 to Andrew and Julia(Olson) Mortensen at the home of her parents in Wannaska. She married Russell Simmons January 18, 1948 at Riverside Lutheran Church in Wannaska.
Mildred & Russell ran the Simmons’ Grocery in Wannaska from 1948 to 1965. After selling Simmons’ Grocery, Mildred was employed as a permanent seasonal parks worker at McCarthy Beach State Park in Chisholm, Bear Head Lake State Park and Lake Bemidji State Park until her retirement.
Then Mildred & Russell lived on their farm in Linsell Township Marshall County in the summer & fall. They spent their winters in Arizona.
Millie enjoyed cooking, traveling, cooking for her family, corresponding with many friends and relatives, gardening and her volunteer work.
Millie volunteered at the Bemidji hospital and the annual Trinity Lutheran Church Thanksgiving Meal for the Bemidji community. She also volunteered at Life Care Medical Center in Roseau, where she developed many dear friendships.
Mildred is survived by her sister, Lois Berger(EmRance)Keizer, OR, daughter, Sheryl(Richard)Gudvangen, Brookings, S.D., son, Jerry (Katherine Tobin) Simmons, Cloquet, MN; daughter-in-law Milly(Randy)Pracher, Middle River, MN; grandchildren, Tristan(Jessica)Gudvangen, Prairie Village, KS, Jamie (Bri) Simmons, Cloquet, MN, Missy (Reynald) Preteau, Cloquet, MN, David (Jessica)Simmons, Moose Lake, MN, Sawyer Simmons, Cloquet, MN; and great-grandchildren, Madison Preteau, Olivia Simmons, Wyatt Preteau, Brendan Simmons, Owen Gudvangen and Abigail Simmons, and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Russell and son Scott. Sister, Ardyth Fredrickson, brothers, Ray, Orval and Bennie Mortensen.
